REVISED INFORMATION - African Swine Fever Outbreak in Spain
Published: 03/12/2025African Swine Fever in Spain: Implementation of regionalisation measures and restrictions
Following the confirmation of restricted zones by the Spanish authorities, regionalisation measures, and restrictions for African Swine Fever (ASF) in Spain have now been officially implemented and reflected in the relevant third-country lists.
Background
On 27 November 2025, Spain reported its first outbreak of ASF since 1994 (see WAHIS). As a result, Spain has lost its ASF-free status.
Regionalisation measures and restrictions for ASF in Spain have now been implemented and reflected in the relevant third-country lists, following confirmation of the restricted zones by the Spanish authorities.
To clarify the impact of these measures:
- Trade from outside the restricted zones in Spain can now resume as normal.
- Trade from within the restricted zones remain highly restricted as: live porcine (pigs and wild boar), fresh porcine meat/meat preparations and raw porcine material for the production of petfood.
Additionally, porcine semen is restricted from the entire territory of Spain.
For your reference, please find the updated third-country lists below:

If you are importing porcine products, medium risk from the restricted zones in Spain, please take note of the following products that are not allowed for Imports to GB:
- Fresh meat/ Meat preparations
- Meat products from domestic pork meat treated with less than treatment “D” (a minimum temperature of 70 °C which must be reached throughout the meat and/or stomachs, bladders and intestines during the processing of meat products and treated stomachs, bladders and intestines, or for raw ham, a treatment consisting of natural fermentation and maturation of not less than nine months and resulting in the following characteristics: Value of not more than 0,93 or pH value of not more than 6,0) and meat products from wild boar meat treated with less than treatment “C” (a minimum temperature of 80 °C which must be reached throughout the meat and/or stomachs, bladders and intestines during the processing of the meat product and treated stomachs, bladders and intestines).
Regarding fresh meat/meat preparation from the restricted area, please note that, there’s no official closing dates in place yet, therefore, these commodities cannot be accepted currently regardless of the slaughter dates.
Please be advised that if your consignment does not meet these requirements, it will be detained and rejected at the border control post.
